I live east of Toronto and have searched far and wide for pukka British meat pies aka Aussie pies aka South African pies. Most recently I drove over an hour to Brampton to Pie Guyz to taste me some steak & kidney pies and while flaky and tasty IMHO it was not the real thing.
To me a proper British/Oz/ SA meat pie has to be eaten by hand and has to have just the right gravy consistency so that when you bite into it, it stays together. The Pie Guyz meat pie came in an aluminum container and the base stuck to the can so you could not even flip it out and eat. You had to use a fork and it cost $5.
I just happened across a butcher store that has been around for almost 50 years in Oshawa and minutes from me that sells about 10 different meat pies and the price is really good - $3.50 each for a decent size pie. They were honest enough to admit they do not make it but have it brought in ( every Thursday ). They did tell me who their supplier was but I forgot. They must have a high turnover in the pies as I have been two Thursdays in a row and the amount they have brought in was huge and if you go a few days later they almost all gone.
Place is Buckingham Meat Market on Buckingham Road, Oshawa. The pies are unfortunately not warm but they also not frozen. You need to take them home and place in a toaster oven for about 10-15 minutes. They also sell sausage rolls and cornish pasties.
