SAMOSAS - March 2020 Home Cooking Dish of the Month

MelMM | Mar 1, 202007:48 AM     18

Welcome to the reporting thread for our March, 2020 Dish of the Month. This month we'll be making samosas! We're all familiar with the most common Indian samosa, filled with spiced potatoes and peas. But there is much more to the samosa. The are myriad possibilities for fillings: vegetables, meats, cheese, dals... there are even dessert samosas, if you want something sweet. And the samosa extends beyond India. The Web site "The Better India" gives some history on the dish and its contemporary scope and variety:

"The samosa’s origins actually lie thousands of miles away in the ancient empires that rose up in the Iranian plateau at the dawn of civilization itself. The gastronomic literature of 10th century Middle Eastern cuisine, especially early medieval Persian texts have many mentions of the sanbosag, an early relative of the samosa and an etymological cousin of the Persian pyramidal pastry, samsa.

"Other historical accounts also refer to sanbusak, sanbusaq and even sanbusaj as tiny mince-filled triangles, eaten by travelling merchants around campfires and packed in saddlebags as a snack for a long journey. According to these accounts, it was thanks to these travelling merchants that the stuffed triangle travelled from Central Asia to North Africa, East Asia and South Asia."

Use this thread to report on the samosas you make. Per Chowhound rules, please do not post another author's recipe verbatim, but you may paraphrase it or include a link. If your recipe is original, you are welcome to include it in its entirety, if you like. And show us what you’ve got! Your photos are encouraged, but are by no means required.
