we got around to trying the new Sal's restaurant in Lawrence yesterday. it's right off of 495 on merrimack st.
this place is very good. very large, high ceilings and huge windows overlooking the river. they also have a big deck right on the river that will be a big draw in the warmer months. i also think (i did not check it out) they have a bar with several large panel tvs.
the menu is solid red sauce italian. they also have their signature 3lb pizzas as well as smaller 'gourmet' pizzas too.
i started with a ceaser salad which was really yummy and dressed with a proper garlic-forward dressing. i asked for extra anchovies and got a dozen(!) meaty large filets for $2 extra. my son got the mac and cheese (he didn't really wanna go to Sal's) and finished it all in about 2 minutes, he LOVED it. i had the chicken parm and was very impressed with the dish altogether, their red sauce is very nice. my son then had the cheescake which was again finished off in very short order, leaving me to only sample the berry sauce.
the prices are very reasonable. the tab, with a sprite for the kid and glass of red for myself was $35 (not including tip.) their wine list is fairly large for a family style place and service was good with only one hiccup when our dinners were brought out before my salad was done. but overall this place is doing something right. i will be back, especially when they open the deck.
i like what is happening to Lawrence.
