Well, I had an excellent dinner at Eleven Madison Park last night. Kerry Heffernan was making his rounds around the room and he was superbly nice. I'm a big fan of Danny Meyer's restaurants and have always been impressed by the level of service. I sipped a glass of Rose Guiot at the nice bar waiting for my companion - the bartenders were friendly and diners at the bar were being served promptly and courteously.
We got seated shortly after my friend got there, and we had a very helpful waiter. I definitely appreciated getting a bottle of wine (a French Syrah) at RW prices - $20.12. We both started with the chilled asparagus soup - excellent starter, the crab roll was a bit salty but a good complement to the smooth soup. The wild asparagus in the soup was wonderful - I could have just eaten those.
Chef Heffernan stopped by our table, chatted with us, and served us the English pea flan with prosciutto and morels as a complimentary course (along with his card). This flan was my favorite of the night; wonderfully creamy and great with the ham and morels (I love mushrooms of all kinds). Thank you, Chef!
For entrees, my friend had the pan-roasted fluke, which was good, but I preferred my shortribs entree - very tender and went well with the greens and carrots. Perfect with the wine as well.
For dessert, the chocolate caramel tart was OK, I liked the chocolate hazelnut parfait better. The petit fours were good - I love the tamarind jelly.
One clunker: the famous $20 gift certificate is ONLY offered at lunch, which doesn't make sense to me when we pay more for an RW dinner. The waiter said it's because the lunch business is slower. Hmph.
Oh well, otherwise, it was a great RW experience and I'll be sure to come back for LUNCH.
