The Rooster Cafe now occupies the former space where Mitae Ramen used to be. I dropped by for lunch yesterday, after reading some reviews that it had been open since the beginning of July.
The menu is mostly breakfast and lunch foods. From the reviews I read, quite a few people raved about the French Dip, which is one of my favorite comfort foods, so I had to try that, being moderately priced at $6.49. The sandwich is about average sized, being about 8" long, sliced into two halves. Very tender meat, looking like slightly thicker slices of brisket, instead of the really thin slices of roast beef that other places might serve. A slice of melted cheese was included, might have been provolone or white American cheese, I'm not sure. The side cup of au jus was slightly thicker than I'm normally used to dipping, but it tasted just about right, not being too salty or too watery. Served with a slice of pickle on the side.
Overall, it tasted very good, and probably one of the better French Dips I've had in OC. Better than what I've had at the Hat, and slightly better than the beef brisket sandwich at Tommy Pastrami (which they serve with au jus, so it becomes a French Dip). It might have been that slice of melted cheese (which I rarely see in French Dips) that made it slightly better than others that I've tasted in the past.
I've only been to Philippe's once years ago, and I wasn't much of a fan of the sandwich being pre-dipped and the small portions, so it's easy for me to say that the Rooster Cafe has a better French Dip. But I would like to go back to Philippe's again at some point since so many people love it and try the lamb double dip w/bleu cheese that many recommend.
For French Dip lovers in OC, I can easily recommend adding the Rooster Cafe to the top of your lists. I'll be going back to get the French Dip again, and try some of their other sandwiches and breakfast offerings.
