Last weekend I noticed a new addition to what is anotherwise relatively bleak Rego Park chow scene, a Mexican eatery in the space of what was once a crappy luncheonette. I gave it a try last night. Sadly, my friend and I and another twosome were the only customers. Though, the waitress seemed delighted to have us. I found it hilarious when she explained to me that Tecate is a beer!
Turns out this new spot, Tropicana 88 #2 (97-23 64th Road) is affiliated with a restaurant on Roosevelt. After much convincing from the waitress, including a taste-test of the sauce which spurred me to ask for it spicier, I went with Coctel Vuelve a La Vida (Return to Life). It was a whomping bowl containing a cold seafood concoction teeming with shrimp, oysters, mussels, fish and bits of avocado in an oniony tomato broth. My friend had a cubana sandwich, which looked pretty good, save for the fact they used american cheese instead of queso blanco. Definitely worth further investigation.
