Road Trip Report: Milwaukee-Chicago-Toledo-Cleveland-Columbus (Part III Toledo & Cleveland)

Civil Bear | Oct 8, 201209:55 AM     2

We had a great food visit in your neck of the woods on our week long road trip through the Great Lakes region. Our primary goal was to hit up local foods & institutions, and I think we did quite well for the most part. In Toledo & Cleveland:

Tony Packo’s in Toledo
Tried the stuffed cabbage, sausage, & paprika dumpling combo. Not bad, but not much to write home about. Service was very friendly though and we were glad we stopped in. If I worked in the area it would probably be on the lunch rotation, but would try something else if passing through again.

Dinner at Lola in Cleveland
Wow! Probably the best meal I have ever had at this price point (and coming from San Francisco that is saying a lot). From the service, to the cocktails, to the apps, entrées, and dessert, everything was perfect. Beef cheek perogies, tomato soup with bacon & lobster, the most tender hanger steak ever, Berkshire pork chop, and the French toast dessert were all fantastic. Best $150 including drinks, tax & tip I have spent on a meal.

Breakfast at Slyman’s
Great, great spot, and the corned beef was amazing. You know a place is good when it pack with folks from all works of life!

Late Lunch/Early Dinner (Linner?) at Sokolowski’s
Despite the warnings from several chowhounders we decided to go for it any ways…and we were glad we did! I think arriving just as the opened for dinner really helped because the fried perch was just out of the fryer and the fried Walleye was cooked to order. And we are certainly no perogie experts either, but I thought they were very tasty smothered in onions. Friendly staff there too.

Early breakfast at West Side Market
We hit up most of the public markets in each town of our trip, and this was by far and away the best. I was in meat heaven and was ready to move to Cleveland just so I could visit this place every weekend! Especially enjoyed the thick-cut jerkies from Czuchraj meats. So we packed a picnic lunch for the Ohio State game and headed off to Columbus…
