River Oyster Bar and Mishy's = Miami

T. Pigeon | May 13, 200601:41 AM

Went to both places today.

River Oyster Bar
Scene & Service - Large bar with a seating area on each side of the bar which takes up the center area of the restaurant. The place is nice but not fancy. It is crowded and full of white collar workers on their lunch break. Service was very good.

Prices - Medium/high depending on what your order

Raw Oysters - Ranged from Very Good to Excellent. Great starter. Had 3 different types.

Ceviche - I thought it was very good but I liked francesco's better because of their sauce. My ceviche loving friend said that the one here was slightly better as they prefer the ceviche without the sauce.

Oysters & Chorizo - Very good+.

Mussels in coconut sauce - Very good+

Tuna Tar Tar - Very good.

Pulled Pork Sandwich - Excellent. Amongst the best I have had but I am not an expert as I have not been to places like Memphis TN. to compare. Big thanks to advisorgirl on this rec. I would never have chosen this without your post.

Dessert - from the price fixe menu - cake caramel heavy cream dish that was very good.

Overall - Very Good/Excellent belongs among one of the best restaurants in Miami. Lax once posted that this place waxes alta mar and he is certainly correct (no surprise that lax is right on btw, I am just giving credit where it is due).

I think francesco is a bit better than this place though as nothing matched the magical squid ink dish.

Note that I ate like a pig at river for a late lunch and came here for an early dinner. I may be underestimating the dishes here to take into account that I was still pretty full by the start of dinner, though I don't think so...

Scene & Service- I can see why lax complained about the wannabees, that invade this restaurant. There were not many there at the time I went as the place was only half full, but there were some around (it was no accident that I chose an early dinner time here).

The place is colorful but not fancy. There is a bar at the back of the restaurant. The service was very good but not quite as good as river because they did not break up our dish orders into courses and instead threw all the plates on our table at once.

Price - This place is expensive because portions are small for the most part so you have to order a few things to become satisfied.

Quail - Very Good. Fried on the outside. My second favorite dish.

Croquettes - Very Good/Excellent - Certainly the best I ever had but I have little experience with this dish so I am going to flake out on the Excellent. It was the best non dessert plate I had by a good margin though.

Lamb Meatballs - Special - very good had an interesting sauce and great taste.

Pork Ribs. Good/Very good. Meat quality is great but I thought the sauce was a little bland.

Gnocci - good. Not quite flavorful enough for me to rate it higher

Some Kind of Dulce De Leche ice cream with banana something else :) - This is probably very good, but I would not get this dessert here.

Baked Alaska - Excellent. This is one of the best desserts I ever had anywhere. It so good that it made the other dessert taste bad by comparison though I knew it was not as I tried the other dessert first. You must go here to just have this dessert.

Overall, very good. I personally liked the river oyster bar better, but like I said, it is possible I am dinging Mishy a bit because I had a lot to eat only a few hours before eating there.
