R&G lounge dinner

Carlosuave | Feb 21, 200501:19 PM

As promised, WLA sent me a coupon to R&G ($25 off dinner) to take my wife out for a late Valentine's Day dinner. We arrived at 7:25pm for 7:30pm dinner and were seated prompty in the upstairs dining room. The restaurant was crowded but tea and menus were served promptly.

The menu:

Salt and pepper crab (compulsory)
Wonderful. Perfect amount of batter and not doughy like some versions. Crab was sublime and obviously fresh out of the live tanks. On a side note, crab was brought out minutes after we ordered which makes me wonder whether it was precooked or intened for another table. We waited another 10 min. for the rest of our entrees.

Honey walnut prawns (wife's favorite)
Unlike your run of the mill chinese restaurant, R&G's version used very fresh and plump shrimp. Walnuts on the other hand, were ordinary and even a bit limp.

Clams and black bean sauce
Good, but nothing special given the $13 tag.

R&G house special beef
Tender pieces of beef though sweetness was quite cloying. Could've used something else in the dish to counter or balance flavors.

Seafood pan fried noodles
Great balance between crunchy and soft noodles with just the right amount of gravy. Only a few pieces of fresh seafood (prawns, scallop, squid) and three strands of chinese brocolli accounted for the topping.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience. Parking was easy and validated at the garage nearby. Not the most romantic restaurant (noisy) but we expected the crowds.
Service was spotty but helpful once you flagged them down.
