Review: GREEN (Phx / Tempe)

I've never been one to really vegetarian cuisine where "faux" or "fake" meat is served up to masquerade as the real thing.

That being said, I think what Green does with its offerings provides a glimmer of hope.

Tried the Argentine "po-boy" which is composed of fake steak strips, caramelized onions, mayo and chimichuri sauce. With all of the accouterments (esp. that chimichuri sauce) it really didn't matter what the fake steak did or didn't taste like. The sandwich reminded of a really good grilled vegetable sandwich slathered in a sweet/spicy sauce. The texture of the fake meat, however, was very convincing.

We also opted for the mongolian rice bowl (you can get noodles if you like). Again, same fake beef that we had in the po-boy, but this time the beef was accompanied with sauteed onions and green onions and an almost too sweet teriyaki sauce. As with the sandwich, everything was covered up by the sauce that it really didn't matter if the meat was real or not.

Topped off the meal with vegan soft-serve ice cream. This was very good, but then is it really possible to mess up ice cream?

If you're in the mood for a vegetarian/vegan outing, Green is a solid, but probably not spectacular, choice. And, definitely there are much worse choices out there ...
