Retro Bistro, Mouth Prospect

We had a very good dinner at Retro Bistro on Golf Road in Mount Prospect the other night. It's a slightly goofy-looking place in a strip mall. Service managed to be both on the casual side and unobtrusive. We had heard a lot about the food and we weren't disappointed. We split appetizers of crab and rock shrimp cake and escargots. The escargots were pretty much the classic dish, flavored with Pernod and covered with pastry. The shrimp-crab cake was super. The shrimp adds body and even a bit of crunch, and saves the cake from the dreaded mushiness. The cake came surrounded with a leek sauce (I gather they rotate the sauces) and topped with aioli. For a main course, L. had the miniature chateaubriand, medium rare. It came with a peppercorn sauce and excellent mashed potatoes. I had the wasabi-crusted ahi. The crust also has Japanese breadcrumbs in it and it insulates the fish well so that it's nice and rare on the inside. It came with shredded cucumber salad, a say-based sauce, ginger and wasabi. Both meals were served with a nice little selection of vegetables too. The bread served before the meal was very good and fresh. There was a vegetable-bean dip or spread placed on the table with the bread which would be very nice to have if you weren't getting an appetizer. They had a pretty good list of wines by the glass. (We each just wanted one glass of something decent and we didn't peruse the wine list that much; sorry.)
