Brief Report: House

Besseta | Nov 27, 200411:01 PM

In from out of town this week, my party of five chose House, in part based on earlier recommendations on this board and on proximity to our hotel. It was a wise choice.

This restaurant is a very, very good value. The sweet cucumber pickle was a treat. We shared three appetizers - shrimp with mango, some marvelous asparagus with roasted sesame dressing, and chinese chive dumplings. I especially liked the latter two. We shared four entrees - steak with wasabi noodles, grilled shrimp with mushroom rice, and chicken breast and a pork chop with pomegranate currant sauce. We drank from a good assortment of beers.

The food is not pretentious. It is favorful and satisfying. The service was friendly and helpful. The chef was accessible and seemed geuinely interested in our comments.

There are scores of restaurants that are much more expensive. I suspect that few offer a better value. I would go back to House in a flash.

An aside for those who look for that special holiday event: The family had Thanksgiving buffet at the Palace Hotel. The food was not perfect, but wise selection carries the day. The space, the music, the scene offer much for a holiday feast.
