Red Giant Coffee/Bliss Cafe | Redwood City

Melanie Wong | Jun 24, 201807:22 PM

Yesterday I stopped at Red Giant Coffee (fka Bliss Cafe) in downtown Redwood City for the morning cup on my way south. I'd read that it started roasting its own beans at a plant in Palo Alto though the cafe continues to serve Verve, Chromatic, Heart and other roasters beans.

I ordered a pourover of Red Giant's Peruvian Pueblo del Sauce. I've often wondered whether the power of suggestion from reading a label description, in this case "peach, pistachio, tobacco", makes me imagine these flavors on the palate. This time, I'd have to say "NO, and picked up none of those nuances in this coffee. The cup had next to no aroma, a bit of acidic brightness, no fruit tones, and maybe a bit of raw almond-like nuttiness. Pretty disappointing. I was sorry I had not ordered an espresso drink instead made with Chromatic's beans.

However, I did enjoy the Starter Bakery hazelnut kouign amann. It was heated for me in the toaster oven to be served warm.

It was pleasant to sit outside at a sidewalk table on a sunny day. I also appreciated that the metered street parking was free until 10am.
