My lunch, savored at this wine-country vineyard restaurant was a totally unexpected culinary experience! For a hard-to- believe, $45, 3 course Prix-fix luncheon menu, most dishes we ordered were filled with dazzling visual magnetism and epicurean delight. With a 'non-Michelin star trained' chef at the helm of the kitchen, every dishes coming out under his supervision were of surprising, star-studded quality....both in terms of spectacular plate presentation and delectable taste!
The 'Rainbow trout Crudo with orange pickle, Radish and Squid Ink Coral' was one of the prettiest and visually appealing dish I have seen in an Canadian restaurant for a long, long while! The use of 'pickle orange' to go along with the slightly bland tasting fish was a master touch! The Squid ink coral added a nice, crispy component to the textural profile! Very ' French Laundry-esque '!
The ' Pork Belly with squash Puree, Cider glaze and smoked apple ' was sooo good! Our uttered 'Wow' could be heard by tables near by! Fork tender, the gelatinous and chewy piece of protein was finished off with a crispy caramelized crust and cider glaze. Our glass of late harvest Riesling paired perfectly with it! Delish!
Both of us had the ' Medium rare Bavette steak, braised cheeks, Porcini whipped Potato, Cultivated Enochi mushrooms, Rapini and Peppercorn jus as entree. What else can we say about this uber-delicious rustic/comfort dish except that it must be the best beef dish we have had in Canada for a long, long time! The seared steak and braised cheeks combo was delightful and enjoyable....both in composition, form and taste! The velvety smooth, whipped Porcini mashed potato was perfect to mop up the delicious sauce. Yummm!!
Dessert was just the right size. The refreshing whipped cream and Apple jam were an impeccable match for the Apple and poppy-seed cake. Once again, a sliver of delicate Apple crisp was masterfully added to create a welcoming interacting textural feel.
Service by our lady server ' Cheryl ' was friendly, attentive and professional.
I will definitely return with the family to try out their other offerings....in particular a ' Wild line-caught Ling Cod with Trout Ikura vin blanc/beurre blanc! '!
