Three friends and I had dinner tonight at Raagini, a rather fancy and relatively expensive Indian restaurant near the Westfield/Scotch Plains area of New Jersey.
Despite the raves from the Star-Ledger and the NJ regional New York Times, the food was worse than mediocre, I'm afraid. We had a couple of specials, a vada chaat that featured tasteless vada and a sauce too light on the yogurt and too heavy on the tamarind sauce (anything that was supposed to be sour here was too sweet).
Our best dish was a chicken dish marinated overnight in mustard and mustard seeds and then cooked on the tandoor. Pretty good.
My tandoori salmon was poor. Although it too was supposed to have been marinated overnight, it had little taste. The chicken vindaloo was too sweet and not hot at all. The dal and raita were poor.
The bread, nan and onion kulcha, were average.
Too bad. The space is quiet and comfortable, and the service is friendly and relaxed. But the food quality just isn't there. Was it ever?
