Quality thermometer

My temperature probe thermometer has gone berserk. Sometimes it just starts beeping in the drawer in the middle of the night. Sometimes it will refuse to register a temp. It will let you set the alert temp, but then immediately resets the alert to 122 degrees. If you tap it, reinsert the probe wire a few times, and wave a chicken feather dipped in blood over it, it will work long enough to take a temp reading.

The thermometer is about 4 years old. Changing the battery had no effect.

I can't remember the brand, it is a white oval.

I assume it's a case for the trash can, so can anyone recommend a really good thermometer that will last?

To make matters worse, I ruined some meringue the other day because (as I belatedly realized) my cheap candy thermometer was pegged on 220...so that went in the trash as well. Should I just use the new meat thermometer or should I spring for one of those laser guided jobs Alton Brown uses?
