Where do pretzel pieces come from?

There was a post on one of the boards fairly recently about Snyder's honey mustard pretzel pieces, and then I found 48-ounce containers of them at BJ's. I agree with the original poster, that the "pieces" are far better than the "nibblers", but that got me to wondering -- while it's clear that the "Nibblers" are a product that's manufactured as such, what about the pretzel pieces, or similar products such as the Oreo pieces that were/are sold in a container (although I don't think I've seen those lately) for use as an ice cream topping? Is this a case of manufacturers making the best of a bad situation, and turning production damage into a marketable item, or does this stuff actually have to be processed twice -- pretzels or cookies baked and prepared as normal, then crushed?
