Portuguese-style rolls

Friends Betsy and Peter got up very early in the morning to purchase Portuguese-style rolls and cheeses from La Salette in Sonoma and Portuguese Market in Petaluma for a morning wine tasting. We worked out way through evaluating 36 fortified wines from Spain and Portugal --- Port, Madeira, Setubal and Sherry --- and these little rolls were the perfect palate cleansers. Tender thin crust, a cake-like texture and a little bit of cinnamony spice that was so complimentary to the wines but didn't overshadow any of them. La Salette bakes their own and the ones from the Market come from a bakery in San Jose. I also liked being able to compare our local Matos St. George style cheese with the imported original.

Peter said the market in Petaluma will be closing in June. Sadly, there's just not enough demand for Portuguese food stuffs locally.
