The Po'Boy, Uncle Darrows...

I used to work in Industrial Los Angeles. It wasn’t the prettiest of work destinations in the city, but it left me VERY close to R-23, which meant I enjoyed many a lunch special of their fried oysters! That was six months ago… And for the last three months, I’ve been craving fried oysters…

I tried some fried oysters at the San Pedro Fish Market… AWFUL… They all tasted ‘off’. Then I remembered reading a rave for Uncle Darrows… and seeing that their Bayou Special Po’Boy had fried oysters! Well today I’ve finally got a chance to visit…

It’s located on the corner of Lincoln and Washington in MDR. Their back wall faced Lincoln, so it wasn’t until I drove into the parking lot I saw what a nice space it was!! There was plenty of parking and there was very nice patio seating outside. Overall, very nice décor…

I ordered the Bayou Classic and a side of Jumbalaya… The Po’Boy had both fried oysters and shrimp… However, I was kinda disapointed by the batter. It’s just not the style I like… It was a very thin corn meal batter, it was VERY crunch, but gritty… The overall taste of the sandwich was good, nice fresh ingredients, but a bit bland and needed quite a bit of their hot sauce (which was wonderful!). However, towards the end end of the sandwich, I hit one of those ‘off’ oysters…UGH… Maybe it’s just the type of oysters they use… either way, I’ll probably be heading back to R-23 to kill that craving…

I then tried the Jumbalaya… Great look… Pilaf style with lots of sausage and spices. Upon the first bite, it seemed pretty bland. I thought ‘another disapointment’ but then came the BURN… That lovely burn… I spooned another bite and same effect… I ate it all up happily!! The only thing, is that I recommend it as a side, it probably would be TOO much as a entrée…

I defintly plan to go again… the folks were very nice and they take lots of pride in what they make (They even had a VERY homemade looking carrot cake on display for dessert!) and I know I’m probably also going to be craving that Jumbalaya….

Their website is : http://www.uncledarrows.com and on the 7th they are going to have a birthday party with ½ specials and entertainment. Call to get the details…
