Places we come back to: celebrating the Vernal Equinox and more at Bacco...

There is an interesting thread on the DC boards about 'places we keep coming back to'. For me, that place is Ristorante Bacco on Diamond in Noe Valley.

When I got a hankering for risotto yesterday afternoon hubby knew what he had to do, and called Bacco for a last-minute reservation. A slick move on his part: he remembered what I had (shamefully) forgotten: it was five years ago today that we had our first date: at Bacco. (Ironically, we had chosen the Vernal Equinox partially because we had a feeling things would work out well, and wanted a date that was easy to remember).

That was my first visit to Bacco. Hubby has wanted a neighborhood place that was romantic around the edges but but not overtly so, with good food. He probably also chose Italian to give himself something to talk about if the conversation lagged (hubby has travelled quite a bit in Italy).

Anyway, obviously, the date went well, Bacco worked well. And in five years, it hasn't let me down since. (ordering the risotto is one good way to assure it won't let you down either).

Only one bummer: the official start of spring is still too early for the fava bean crostini. Guess we have to wait a few more weeks for spring to really arrive. We had the winter version last night, with cannellini beans, but it isn't quite the same (though certainly tasty).

I also enjoyed continuing to make my way though the relatively new all-Italian wine list. Last night we had a Luigi Baudana Chardonnay, steel fermented. Very nice change from California Chardonnays...

five years, still happy to be going back.
