What exactly is 'pitting'?

I read here that salting water before it comes to a boil may cause pitting problems. I haven't encountered this problem and don't know exactly what that means. You mean tiny little dents will form on the inside bottom and sides of the pot due to the salt? Is this really a problem? Is this a problem with particular types of pots, such as aluminum or copper instead of stainless steel? Can someone explain?
