Pie Chest is near the Downtown Mall and is open for breakfast and lunch. They make sweet pies and two types of savory pies: pot pies and hand pies. I tried at least a couple of all three types.
Hands down, the pot pies are the winner here, and they are glorious. Go, go, go for these. Tried the chicken, bacon and garlic pie and the butteriness of the crust combined with the roast garlic was a winner. Also tried the spinach and artichoke made with a lot of artichoke! Excellent.
The hand pies are too much of a good thing. The amount of crust overwhelms and the filling is drier. Both the chicken (surprisingly plain) and the cheddar vegetable got lost in the crust.
The sweet pies are a mixed bag. Go for something chocolate and you probably can't go wrong. The banana rum cream pie (where was the rum?) and the cherry cobbler were ok at best. The peanut butter chocolate was sinful, as expected.
La Flor Michocana is a Mexican ice cream place that also features many varieties of paletas (ice pops.) Some of them have dairy. But the real deal here is the horchata which they make fresh, not form a powder. It s wonderfully creamy. Hard to go wrong with the great ice creams. The success of the paletas will probably depend on the flavor you choose. The ones with big chunks of fruit are probably the way to go, and I am intrigued by the rice pudding, tres leches, and the caramel. Next time.
