Looking For Phoenix Dragon

Tommy Meehan | Jul 11, 2004 11:36 PM

"To get the brown stuff, you have to go to an old school Cantonese place. Try Phoenix Dragon on 39th between 2nd/3rd."

The above was posted by Shirley the other day in response to my question about where to find Shrimp w/Lobster Sauce made the old way. With a thick, brown, garlicky, egg white-laden sauce. Instead of the tasteless "white" broth that seems to have replaced it.

Ummm, Shirley, when's the last time you actually ate at Phoenix Dragon? I went looking for it Saturday nite and it wasn't there. Not on 39th, anyway. I walked all the way down to 1st Avenue, then back up almost to Lexington. There was a place called - Byalob? - near 3rd, and a sushi place closer to 2nd. But no Chinese restaurant called Phoenix Dragon, in fact no Chinese restaurants on 39th Street at all. Since I was in the mood for Chinese I did try the takeout place on 3rd between 39th and 38th. Ming's Delight. It was....I wouldn't make a special trip, let's put it that way.
