The Perfect Saturday in Da Nint' Ward

Daniella | Feb 7, 200310:59 AM

This past Saturday was the most perfect day ever! My significant other and I decided to shake off sleep and go for a walk. We live in the Lower Garden District, just off St. Charles Ave, so after a fortification of coffee and bagels at The Bayou Bagelry, we started our pleasant walk towards the CBD. We stopped in to see a friend at Ya Ya on Baronne and accompanied her to Canal Street. The weather was so gorgeous, we decided to continue on down Royal Street taking a peek at the various antique stores along the way. Once we reached Esplanade, we decided to try to find Elizabeth's since neither of us had ever been there and the Chowhounds haved waxed poetic about it. So we walked... and walked... and walked. We passed the new NOCCA building (well, it's not so new, but I had never seen it), we passed a couple of neighborhood galleries and a couple of falling down houses. Finally, just as I commented to my guy that I could walk no more, there it was... a little white house containing brunchy delights like no other! I had a wild mushroom and goat cheese tart for a starter (fabulous with real, southern style "Sweet Tea"). Then I had an egg dish with grilled eggplant and crawfish with a side of cheese grits... yum-o-rama! My guy had an eggs benedict-like dish that looked great, but I didn't try it. Mind you, the portions were enormous! The waitstaff was super friendly and everyone in the restaurant seemed to know everyone else, but in a nice way, not in the "hipper than thou" way that you sometimes encounter in da Nint' Ward. When I mentioned to my guy that we were not going to make it to the new wine store grand opening party at the American Can building, the waiter told us about the free wine tastings every third Saturday at Bacchanal, a wine store just around the corner at Poland St. and Chartres. So, off we went... Bacchanal was lovely and the owner knowledgeable and attentive -- everyone should give this little place more business! We bought several bottles of wine, then hopped the Royal St bus to Canal St and the streetcar home... All in all, a perfect Chowhound day... and we walked off the calories from that huge brunch! Good eats, folks! By the way, my significant other is supposedly posting about this as well... check out his write up and compare! ~~D
