When CT magazine recently rated the Penny Lane Pub on Main St. the best lunch and value in Middlesex county, I took that with the usual grain of salt, but decided it was worth a visit at least. In the vicinity at noontime, we dropped in without a reservation and although busy they found a small table free for us. Caution: unless in a booth, the tables are quite close together, and our neighbor mentioned that we felt like family!.
The food, however, was quite good. I enjoyed the special Steak Quesadilla, with tasty encrusted peppers, onions and mushrooms, accompanied by nice sweet potato fries with a peppery mustard dipping sauce. DW was equally complimentary of the Steak Panini sandwich. To support the "pub" in their name, they listed over two dozen beers and a greater number of wines, from which I found a very satisfactory Zin.
Their menu maven has a sense of humor. I'll have to go back to sample their Loverly Lamb salad, or their Eleanor Rigby's Chicken Marsala for dinner sometimes. You can see their menu at
I think CT magazine got it right this time.
