Peeling Vegetables

In recent weeks, I have seen at least 2 statements on other boards that peeling vegetables significantly compromises their nutrient value. The specific threads had to do with carrots, but comments by various posters extended this proposition to vegetables pretty much across the board. None of the posts cited specific
authority.

So, I searched but the best I could come up with were statements that eating vegetables is (generally) good.
Then I thought about what vegetables I peel:

onions (always)
carrots (usually)
celery (always)
asparagus (if thick stalk)
cucumbers (sometimes).

Does anyone know whether the assertion that peeling significantly degrades nutritional value is true and, if so, can you cite a recognized, authoritative source to support this.
