Tonight was the first Tuesday dinner service for Ken's Place. To usher in the new night of dining, Ken is preparing cast iron pan-fried buttermilk chicken. Decided I might as well go while the getting's good.
Pretty much everyone there tonight was getting it. I saw tables of four or more with every person getting the fried chicken.
It was quite tasty. The breading was a little salty, but very nice. It had the tell-tale signs of pan-frying, something almost impossible to find since deep-frying is much quicker and easier. But pan-frying creates flavoring in the crust that deep frying can't repeat. It was quite juicy and tender. I do wish that I could get all dark meat. Maybe I could have requested it. If you're like me and prefer dark meat, I suggest making the request and seeing what they say. I didn't see any thighs, though, which are my favorite piece. Best fried chicken I've had since my trip to Stroud's in Kansas City last summer.
The potatoes were fantastic. They were country-style with skins still in and left a little chunky. I like the texture and that's how I prefer them. They also had a bit of tang from perhaps buttermilk or sour cream. Very nice touch. I usually don't like cream gravy, but his was excellent. It was packed with flavor.
The plate came with three pieces of chicken (a leg and two split and halved breasts) and a huge mound of mashed potatoes for $15.75. We also got a Caesar and onion tart and were bloated afterwards. (My wife and I split everything.)
