[PDX] Dewey's Frozen Custard...

extramsg | Aug 26, 200502:30 AM

Hit this Lake Oswego spot for cool treats. It's in a strip mall and looks like it might be a chain, but it's not. They do indeed also have hot eats.

The bulk of the menu is populated by ice cream and sundaes. They have about 30 toppings or so and you can mix and match your own or choose one of their "favorites" with names like Kilauea Coconut, The Barking Dog, or Yee Haw.

They have chocolate or vanilla soft serve made throughout the day. They also had a special of strawberry shortcake ice cream.

I just got a small, which was actually pretty huge, cup of vanilla for $3.15. It's not cheap compared to Dairy Queen, but, you know...that's Dairy Queen. I thought it had a nice texture and decent flavor. I didn't think it was as custardy (ie, eggy) as the stuff from Sheridan's, but it was also less sweet.

My fellow feeder (who may pop in here) had a sundae, the Yee Haw with raspberries, hot fudge, whipped cream, and cherry. I thought their toppings were much better than Sheridan's because they weren't cloying.

They also serve Thomas Kemper on tap which they use for their floats. Personally, I like Kemper's ginger soda a lot, but think their root beer is mediocre, no better than A&W or Mug. Wish they had Weinhardt's instead. Now that's some tasty root beer.

For savory items, they have Nathan's hot dogs made NY style with mustard and sauerkraut or Chicago style with mustard, sweet relish, tomato, onions, dill pickles, peppers, and celery salt. They're now also serving Italian beef sandwiches, dipped in au jus as they should be. They're going to start making NY style deli sandwiches, too, including corned beef or pastrami on rye, bringing in special rye and sliced meats. It seems the proprieter has lived in both NY and Chicago and is earnestly trying to recreate some of his beloved foods, which I can definitely respect. Haven't tried any of these yet, though, so I hope some people who live down that way will try them out and tell me whether I should make the effort.

Seems like a good addition, though, and a great alternative in Lake O to Cold Stone and Subway. Better food cheaper by someone who seems to actually care about his product.
