PDX: Chowin' at Lucere

There are those -- including Professor Porter, writing in WilliWeek -- who might say that Lucere is the best restaurant in Portland. I do not have an opinion, having not eaten at enough of the pretenders and not having tried Lucere's full menu. I mention this only as a lead-in to a wonderful arrangement of which few may know: That there is a GREAT deal to be had in the bar at Lucere during Happy Hour, on food from the same kitchen that turns out the (maybe best) dinner entrees.

Right now, for example, the Happy Hour menu includes the following: soup of the day, $2; pommes frites w/ garlic aioli, $2; flash-fried calamari, with lemon aioli, $2; salmon and potato cake with red pepper saffron aioli, $2; BBQ roast beef sandwich, $3; and a tillamook cheddar cheese burger that MUST be at least 6 oz. (and maybe 8) with lettuce, tomato, blue cheese, pickle slice and (1) pepperoncino on a seeded bun, for $3. Oh yes: martinis, manhattans and microbrew pints are $3.50, and there seems to be a one-drink minimum. (Tough; call me and I'll come drink it for you if you teetotal.)

The menu also includes the following slightly under-punctuated and puzzling entry, which I quote verbatim: "the above items are available between 3pm-6:30 pm and 9pm-close all day Sunday". You might want to call if the ambiguities of that phrase are relevant to your possible dining plans.

I went and had the burger and some frites this evening. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
