I'm a lifelong Chicagoan, and there are some things that are better here than anywhere, i.e. hot dogs, pizza and of course, our own Italian Beef. But, when it comes to real Jewish delicattessen, we're nowheresville. I've looked everywhere in Chicagoland, and nobody has a very good pastrami sandwich...basically all that you get is fat, not very good meat. Compare that to Katz's, the Carnegie, the Stage, or any one of a multitude of places in New York. Or the fantastic, fabulous, smoked meat at Centre Street Deli in Thornhill, Ontario in the Toronto area. Or for the best of them all, Langers in Los Angeles. But alas, for as good as the soups and desserts are at Max and Benny's in Northbrook, or the wonderful bagels at Uncle Max in Highland Park, the pastrami doesn't make one dream of the Lower East Side. The best I've found in Chicagoland is at Manny's on Roosevelt and Jefferson in the city...but it also isn't nearly up to the aformentioned standards. Anyone know where to get a REAL pastrami sandwich here, without going to O'Hare?
And while I'm at it...why can you only get half sour pickles in Chicagoland? I don't want to take your cucumber look alikes away...but does any place have full done pickles, like they do every where else?
Oh, if only the old S&L Deli at Kedzie and Lawrence was still in business ;o)
