Parents' 50th anniversary party

Hostess with the Mostess | Jul 22, 200307:47 PM

I am an out-of-towner and have been charged by my siblings with the task of planning my parents' 50th anniversary dinner next month. Yikes. It's a very small family affair (just 10 adults and 2 kids) but we would like to have a private room so we can talk. I was thinking of cocktails on the porch at The Columns and then dinner at Commanders. And then more drinks and dancing to Jeremy Davenport at the Ritz's french quarter bar or maybe James Rivers at the Fine Arts Center. Am I doing the right thing?? I have heard people say Commanders has been backsliding...would Upperline be better??

Also while we are all in town we will be celebrating my sister's 45th birthday. What would be good possibilities for a nice, but perhaps not as pull-out-all-the-stops as my parents' dinner? She is into innovative but still uniquely Southern style cooking. Is Santa Fe in the Maringy good? Its near where we are staying and she is from New Mexico so might enjoy the German chef's tex-mex/new orleans menu. I think they also have private rooms. Then again, she can get pretty good tex-mex at home...

Many thanks in advance!
