I haven't been to the NOLA since 2004 and am staying 5 nights (Thursday thru Tuesday morning Jan 7....hence I will be there for the 1st Day of Mardi Gras. Not sure if that is a big deal or not, but should be interesting enough). Why January? Because I can. But anyway. I am looking to finally get more outside the quarter during the day time at least and truly experience Magazine Street [seems I really muffed it during previous visits...like I went to the wrong part].
I was thinking of checking out the race track more for the ambiance than the actual gambling as there won't be live racing that weekend. Is Luizzas by the track worth the effort??
I am actually more partial to divey places with good food and maybe one really good place [though Commanders might be out of my league]. Basically I want all the staples of NOLA -- red beans, Jambalaya, gumbo, oysters, po boys etc. Also wondering if certain things are def. out of season that time of the year.
And, is it safe to walk to the Ernie K Doe Bar late at night from the French Quarter which is where I will be staying. Is it okay to walk the length of Canal Street to the Metarie Cemetery during the day and are there any noteworthy restaurants there?
