When I was a child my Grandma, who spoke yiddish, slovak and hungarian, and lived there in varanno hungary (born in 1908) which became Vranov Slovakia. She used to make a finely diced salad containing tomatoes, sweet peppers, red onion, cucumber, radish, vinegar, salt. It may optionally have had cheese. Is her "Chalamata or Shalamata salad" referring to a mispronunciation of Bulgarian Shopka Salata? Or does the title come from another dish? I cannot find any Ashkenazic cookbooks that mention it. From what I can see on the internet, the Bulgarian salad Shopska Salata was invented in the 1960's and my grandma left Vranov in 1929 come to New York City. So how did such a salad exist in Easter Europe at that time? It was slightly north of where the Turks had conquered.
