A few "best-ofs" in Winnipeg

Best fresh fish market: Costa Brava Fisheries on Sargent. Arrive at about 11am on Wednesday morning for fresh grouper, rockfish, Mediterranean bass, sardines, sea eel, oysters, mussels, periwinkles and much more.

Most interesting smoked fish: Inconnue, or "Coonie", from the Gimli Fish Market on Dufferin.

Best bread: The water bread at the Lisbon Bakery, just a few doors down from Costa Brava. At a buck and a quarter a loaf, it's like stealing.

Best European-style smoked hams, ham sausage and weiners: European Meat Market on Burrows.

Best fresh-market produce: Vic's on Pembina Highway.

Best lamb and veal: Deluca's on Portage Avenue. Pre-order Felice's spiced boneless leg of lamb. Excellent fresh pasta and fresh pizza dough there, too.

Best beef: Black Angus from La Grotta at the corner of Waverley and Taylor. This store also features Winnipeg's best cheese selection.

Best Italian Sausages: A tie between the aforementioned Deluca's and La Grotta.

Best Chinese supermarket: Sun Wah on King St. Always the best selection of fresh Chinese greens and other produce. The in-store Chinese butcher (operated independently) makes world-class BBQ duck and BBQ pork to take away.

Best Specialty Wine Store: Kenaston Wine Market on Grant. Privately owned with the most interesting and eclectic selection in the city. They claim over 2500 different labels in stock.

Best Winnipeg Restaurants to be posted at a later date, if there is interest.
