Walking down Broadway to Citarella's on Friday, I passed a storefront at 77th Street that, until recently, had housed a Duane Reed.
All of their facade had been removed, leaving the detritus of an earlier occupant in place, including a familar neon sign. The earlier occupant was ---- GITLITZ!!! My eyes misted when I saw it.
For those of you too young, or too new to Manhattan, to rememember, Gitlitz was one of the famous UWS delis. Everything was very good there, but their corned beef hash was the gold standard -- each bit of corned beef, potato, or onions individually identifiable, and yet small emough to allow the favors to meld. What a wonderful taste and texture sensation. I have spent many hours since trying to make hash as good as theirs. I have come close, but still no cigar.
