I just stopped by Nio's Trinidad Bakery and West Indian Food in Mt. Vernon, NY. It's at 52 East First Street near the corner of South First Ave. Right by the Mt. Vernon East train station. I got the stewed oxtails in a red / brown sauce redolent of all the West Indian spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. Fantastic. The absolutely best oxtails I ever had. Over rice and peas (beans). The small is enough for a meal and is $4.50.
I also got the curried goat. very, very good. the second best curried goat I ever had. It was served with a sprinkle of a homemade hot sauce. Really good stuff, scotch bonnets, fruit, and a dash of vinegar. Wow... hot but not killer with tons of flavor.
They also had about 8 other curries and stews including shrimp, crab, two types of chicken, fish, beef, and stewed / curried veggies. Also two types of rice, two types of plantains, two types of potatoes and a few other assorted veggies.
Prices were very reasonable at about $4-5 and they also have a few types of ginger beer and other drinks and eats. They are also a bakery but I didn't try anything... I will have to stop by on a regular basis. This is a really good place. No eat in, just a takeout deli.
I did a web search and it looks like they may have another place as well.
