I know some of you love Nicky D's pizza (in Silver Lake). I've had some very inconsistent pies there, so I was still on the fence. Last night, I think I finally fell on the "pro" side. But first, my clam/bacon experience. Last weekend, we got a clam/garlic/bacon pizza delivered. It's an odd thing -- quite flat, no sauce, no oozing cheese at all. Just bits of clam and plenty of crispy bacon bits embedded into some overcooked cheese on top of a very nice, flattish but tasty crust. Now this thing just didn't seem like a pizza to me. If I were having a party, I might get one and cut it into small pieces as a tasty hors d'oeuvre, but as a full dinner, it didn't work for me.
On to last night -- took Chowpup to dine in restaurant. Got a spinach and eggplant pie. It came straight to our table from the oven. The cheese oozed. The sauce complemented. The crust was puffy with plenty of wood-burning oven flavor. The eggplant was probably overkill, as they bread the slices first, but it added another soft and savory layer. Now that's a pizza. We might give the delivery another chance, but I think eating there just seems to work out better.
