'New City' - One of a handful of Hong Kong Style Cafe in Peachtree Plaza, Markham!

Charles Yu | Sep 24, 201601:40 PM

The number of eateries inside of Markham's Peachtree Plaza is mind boggling! Hong Kong style cafes alone must have occupied at least a handful of units in and outside of the plaza?!

After by-passing my usual go-to place 'Blue Ocean' and tried out a surprisingly good ' Ming's' next door last week. My posting of the latter attracted a few thumbs up comments from fellow hounds pertaining to 'another' Hong Kong style cafe - 'New City' nearby! Curiosity got the better of me, so today, I headed down to ' New City' to give ' their ' version of HK style cafe food a try.

We ordered the usual popular HK cafe dishes of ' Baked Ox-Tongue with spaghetti in tomato sauce ', 'Baked Portuguese Chicken on rice' and ' Baked Spaghetti with meat sauce'.

Portions and toppings were very generous. Price point was great. The Ox-Tongue I ordered were really tender and aromatic, the sauce however was a bit less sophisticated and tasty than ' Ming's' next door. The Portuguese Chicken rice was well done and flavorful. Meat sauce spaghetti, though smothered with meaty sauce was a disappointment and underwhelming in taste. The cheese a bit heavy handed and over-powering. 'Bayview Kitchen' near my house at the corner of Bayview and Major Mac is much better. 'New City''s HK style milk tea, though creamy and smooth, lacked the taste of strong tea tannin.

Overall, if I give 'Ming's' a score of 9/10, 'New City' would at most be an 8.

BTW, they also have 'Gui Lin Rice Vermicelli' on their menu. Based on the one ordered by the table next to us, portion is bigger than Ming's and I noticed they use the more authentic thin vermicelli rather than the thicker ' Lai Fun' that Ming's uses. May be we should have ordered a bowl to compare instead of the disappointing meat sauce spaghetti?!
