Mystery Lasagna Ingredient

Recently, I had a vegetable lasagna that seemed to me to have small seed-like balls in it that tasted like anise to me. Would this be the likely (unwanted) taste? What else could it be? They kind of resembled black pieces of rye. Didn't enjoy it, but I wanted to know just the same what is was I didn't enjoy.
