After reading last week's Phoenix review I went to try Sonora Mexican Grill. It is on Western Avenue close to Memorial Drive in Cambridge. A small retaurant with minimal mexican decor.
My party really enjoyed our meal. Nothing fancy-just great cheap mexican. We began with several servings from the serve-yourself chips and salsa buffet on the counter. The chips were homemade, thick-cut and packed a mean crunch. Some were sprinkled with a smidgen of salt or chili powder. The salsas had all the flavor and none of the heat - which is usually not my style because I like it hot - but the flavors in these stood on their own.
*salsa bandera- mild with tomatoes, onions, cilantro,
and serrano chile (like pico de gallo
but with a finer dice)
*salsa verde- medium, not too acidic
*an orange salsa made with chile de arbol -
*marinated onions for an additional topping
I had enchiladas verdes with cheese from the specials menu ($6.50). Three fresh corn tortillas filled with cheddar and white cheese. It was served with spanish rice (very fluffy and mildly seasoned) and refried beans (smooth and sprinkled with white cheese), along with some extra guacamole and marinated tomatoes. The others in my party had a veggie burrito ($5), super nachos with grilled marinated chicken chunks ($4.50), and a chimichanga with the same sides as my dish ($6.50). All of us were full and pleased.
Horchatas were sweet and delicious-rice milk sprinkled with cinnamon. Other specialty drinks offered are the tamarind or the Jamaica, made with Hibiscus flowers (next on my list).
For you meat-eaters, they offer plenty. Slow cooked beef, pork, chicken, chorizo, and steak.
The staff was very pleasant and helpful. It's my new fave cheapo spot ($12 was my bill for 2 entrees). It's hard to find good Mexican here in the NE but this was yummy. I think it's definitely better than Anna's, although I was never too impressed by that place.
