I've got to ask you this.
The Monsier Marcel market in the Farmers Market is something of a joke to me. It's a place I take out of town guests to, to show them that in LA it is possible to pay $10.00 for a small bag of pasta. Or if you choose, to spend that same $10 bill on a small jar of jelly. Or perhaps take 3 of those bills ($30 and change) to purchase a tin of cassoulet (a tin, mind you) of what is essentially a french heat and eat stew. Or you could go to the dairy counter and spend even more on milk (standard as well as more premium brands like Broguires) than you would at Whole Foods.
Now they do have a small but interesting cheese selection, as well as all manner of imported meats (and foie gras for $109.99/pound, with a small sign that says "we cannot offer tastes of this deli item"). But overall, I limit my purchases there to panko breadcrumbs.
Is there anyone here who regularly shops at this market? I would love to hear what items you regularly purchase and why you feel the value is justifiable.
