Yeah, the Mobil Guide is the antithesis of Chowhound, I guess. But, FWIW, local favorite Achatz has pulled off quite a trick: in a very short time, he got himself and Trio 5 stars, while still pleasing the Chowhounds of the world. Notably, neither of Chicago's 5 stars (the other is Trotter's)is a stodgy hotel dining room at a Ritz Carlton. Indeed, the Trio pick almost seems calculated to address critics of Mobil that say it is geared too much to old-fashioned French sensibilities, and a recognition that the important stuff now involves vapors, micro-lozenges of childhood lunchbox favorites, and other vague and/or jarring reminiscences and dejas vus, and is now mostly happening in Spain, London etc.
Also recognized as a new 5-star is our Peninsula, probably the best in the country already if you ask me.
