Exiting Memphis Restaurant on Bristol a couple of months ago, I noticed a small restaurant up a street on the other side of Bristol called Mitae Ramen.
I went for lunch today, and was very impressed.
Its run by a very sweet older (70-ish) Japanese lady, but she has a couple of helpers. There are 6 tables in there, and a 4-seat counter.
She starts by bringing out the menu, and the selection is huge given the size of the place. Soon thereafter comes a big scoop of chopped pickled cabbage and complimentary iced tea (which is refilled often).
I asked what was best, and she pointed me to #4 Ramen with Pork, Flavored with Soy Sauce. My buddy ordered #6, which was Ramen with crab and shrimp.
Whoa!! The portions were huge. And the ingredients were outstanding. The pork in my dish wasnt your typical compressed meat-like substance, it was thick-cut (1/4 inch) pork tenderloin that was tender and slightly stringy as I like it. There was the sweet red marinade on the outside, but this was a sliced pork roast. And they give you a lot. There were 6 slices, which I guess to be about a half pound of meat. The noodles were good, too. They were tender, but firm. And the bean sprouts were crunchy and fresh, and the bok choy was perfectly cooked. The broth was warm and brought the whole bowl together. I could only eat half of it, so I brought the other half home.
The fish ramen was equally imposing. There were huge chunks of crab on top, and probably a half dozen pieces of good-sized shrimp.
This is a totally chowish place. Not much to look at, but really good food.
And to add character to the small center its in, there is the Tin Lizzy saloon. I didnt go in, but I cant imagine it has more than about 5 stools based on the size. This little center is such a trip.
