My mom always made a mincemeat cake for one of my brothers. It was a tradition for his family to eat it on Christmas morning. My mom passed earlier this year and I would like to make one for my brother for Christmas, but have a question. It is an odd recipe, but the cake was delicious. Here are the ingredients:
2 cups water
1 3/4 cups sugar
3/4 cups shortening
1 3/4 cups sifted flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
1 package None Such condensed mincemeat.
I am puzzled by the shortening. I did all of my Moms food shopping for the past few years, and cant remember buying Crisco. Can I use butter instead? TIA.
