Mi Puebla - Mt Airy (Four Thumbs Down)

Last night my husband and I decided to look for a restaurant we hadn't tried in the Chestnut Hill area. We ended up at Mi Pueblo in East Mt. Airy. We arrived early, around 5:30 or 6 and we were the only people there. Should have been a sign but we chalked it up to its being Sunday and pretty early. Yelp and other sites I never trust (lol) showed 4-stars so I thought how bad can it be, right? Silly me. It might be the worst Tex-Mex/"Mexican" food I have ever had. This place was B-A-D.

Chips and salsa were complimentary. The salsa was simply chopped fresh tomato and jalepenos and the chips were warm. When we asked for 2 Cokes, Mexican Coke in the bottle was the default. Okay so far - but not for long.

I ordered chicken enchiladas and specified tomatillo sauce. The server said they didn't have that dish but could make it for me, for $3 more. The menu showed that the enchiladas were served with "chipotle tomatillo sauce," but evidently that didn't qualify. Whatever. The enchiladas came smothered, and I mean buried under about 4 inches of "stuff" (cabbage, radishes, cheese,and avocado), with the sauce running over the sides of the plate. The rice was inside the enchilada and the chicken was stringy and tough. The sauce was okay but on the spicy side. Between the sauce running over the sides of the plate, battling the toppings to get to the enchiladas, and the poor quality of chicken, it was impossible to eat, much less enjoy.

Even worse, one of my husband's "tests" for Mexican restaurants is tamales, so he ordered the pork tamales. I didn't taste them but they looked gross. The dough was bright white and very thick (to me it looked like a big log of lard), with very little filling. I don't know what they used to make the dough but it sure didn't look like any masa I have ever seen. It looked like rice flour but who knows. He said the tamales were way wrong, rice was okay, but he didn't really care for the salad, which consisted of cabbage, green pepper, carrots, red onion and mango.

The heading under the entrees said "* Served With Rice, Pinto Bean [sic] & Salad" but I didn't notice the asterisk and incorrectly assumed I would get rice and beans with my enchiladas. On the other hand, my husband's dish said it came with salad and tomato sauce only but his plate had rice. Not sure why they couldn't just offer beans and rice with all the entrees. It seemed unnecessarily confusing.

With all the good Mexican/Tex-Mex places we have tried in the area (El Limon in Ambler, Cantina Feliz in Ft. Washington, El Sarape in Horsham, and the many other places that have been recommended on Chowhound) there is no reason whatsoever to go to this place. Even Mad Mex is better!

Normally I would give a restaurant a second chance but when they fail at the most basic level I see no point.
