Hands down this distinction has to go to La Abeja, a small, austere but pretty well-known, family-run restaurant in Highland Park. Even the lovely grandmother lends a hand by waiting tables. It's open for breakfast and lunch, but breakfast is my time. Sometimes I wake up with a such a powerful craving for this place, I just get in my car and go. My favorite breakfast dish is the bean, cheese and egg burrito. Lately I've been ordering the Huevos Mexicana, which is a scrambled egg, chopped onions and jalapenos dish. A tasty lunch item is the Pork Adobada dish or the crunchy tacos. It's hard to walk out of La Abeja spending more that $7, tip included. Prices are more than fair. But it's the beans that keep me coming back. For the daring, the Menudo is one of the best I ever tasted. Bring your pot and they'll fill it up for you.
