Markets & Stores

mexican bakery in Adams Morgan et al.

I noticed today that there is going to be a new Mexican panaderia/pasteleria/bakery in Adams Morgan opening on Columbia Road between Ontario and Champlain (south side, across from Safeway). Looks promising.

Also, the other day I saw a new place on U Street between 16th and 15th called Jojo's--not sure if it's open yet. Has anyone been or does anyone know what the scoop is?

Also, someone a while back was looking for Cuban pasteles de guayaba. I found some imported from New Jersey at a market in Mount Pleasant. They aren't the best, but they weren't bad. We call this market Don Julio Dos, but I'm not sure that there is a sign that says that. It's the one at the southwest corner of Mount Pleasant Street and Kenyon (across from 7-11, in the old Payless Shoe Source, which--going way back--was formerly the torched Church's Fried Chicken).

Also on Mount Pleasant street a block or so up is a store called El Progreso that carries Cuban/Florida products like Conchita brand black beans and garbanzos.
