MANNY'S Original, NE corner of Power Road & McDowell was our lunch destination yesterday and proved a very pleasant surprise. My Brooklyn-born husband was delighted with the hot corned beef on rye. We split this because it was huge, a 1/2 pound of tender, thinly-sliced meat huge! Coleslaw & pickles are served gratis a la most delis in New York. Endless refills of iced tea were welcome on this hot day. I saw platters of enormous sandwiches delivered to other tables. Everyone was smiling when they bit into their lunch.
The proprietors are warmly welcoming and helpful to those of us non-New Yorkers unfamiliar with "2 cents plain" which the menu says is "free if you know what it is". My husband said "Seltzer" instantly, I was clueless.
New York street signs and photographs provided nostalgic reminders to many. That they were bolted on to the walls reminded me that Mesa AZ is far, far away from The Big Apple.
The sandwich was about nine dollars, served without "attitude", and a steal for what we got. We'll definately return to try some of the family specialities, often named after mom and dad (Ruth & Manny).
