Mermaid Inn -- Mild Problems (longish)

ChowLad | Jul 11, 2005 08:44 PM

Had a very enjoyable meal at Mermaid Inn on Saturday night, albeit one marred by slight, although, in my mind, easy to remedy problems.

Got there early, enjoyed a drink and a perusal of the crowd (and cute bartender). While the space feels as it transplanted from another neighborhood, the non-overbearing nautical motif is cute and cozy. When my boyfriend arrived, we sat down in the spacious and comfortable back garden. He had a shrimp cocktail and I had a half dozen oysters. The oysters were ice-cold, something I never experienced before and which really detracted from the taste (i.e. -- there was none!). Seems odd because they were seemingly stored on ice at the bar -- unless my particular batch came from the fridge or freezer!

For entrees, we shared their version of the lobster roll, served on a brioche bun, and a pasta w/ shrimp and scallops. The LR was delicious and so was the pasta but the latter was unfortunately so spicy that my boyfriend could only muster a few fork-fulls. No where on the menu were we warned about this -- quite an oversight, in my opinion.

We had coffee and a complimentary cup of chocolate pudding which really hit the spot and made desert unnecessary. The bill came to a little more than $60 per person which I thought was very reasonable (including a mid-priced bottle of white).

Check this place out, but be aware of minor kinks they need to work on!
