Mencia wines from El Bierzo

When eating dinner recently at Campanile, a Los Angeles restaurant, I ordered a bottle of 2000 Tilenus Mencia. I wasn’t familiar with the mencia grape, grown in the El Bierzo region of northwestern Spain, but was smitten with the wine. I have learned that mencia is a relative of cabernet franc, but the wine from El Bierzo has an intensity, minerality, and complexity that distinguishes it from the French and American cabernet franc wines I’ve tasted. The Tilenus Mencia is a great value at around $16 retail. I’m now looking for a bottle of the 2000 Dominio de Tares Mencia to compare with the Tilenus. Have others had the same favorable experience with the mencia wines from El Bierzo?
